ONE HOUR FOR OUR PLANET – LET`S SAVE ENERGY

On Saturday March 27 2010 at 20:30 hours - local time turn off the light for 60 minutes-join the global campaign to save our planet! Let us show that together we can make progress in the fight against climate change-save energy.

Planetary invitation sent within the "One hour for our planet", organized by WWF - World Fund for Nature will also this year bring together hundreds of millions of people from more than 120 countries. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon, described this action as the greatest global public demonstration about climate change ever. "Earth Hour" is the world's most massive expression of positive energy, a planetary phenomenon that has united people of all nations and religions with a clear aim - to unite in the struggle in preserving our planet.

It all started in 2007, when two million two hundred thousand citizens of Sydney (Australia) performed a unique protest against global warming. This movement spread across the globe. Owing to EKOpolis, promoter of world campaign Clean Up the World-clean world, it has also been promoted in our region.

This year in Serbia, with the support of the Ministry for Environmental Protection and Spatial Planning, local NGOs and local governments, this activity is given a special significance. Turning off lights for an hour, citizens, governmental institutions and large corporations, with this gesture will send a clear message to the region of collective concern about the destruction of life environment. Promoters of this campaign in the region-EKOpolis network, Green Key, Society for Nature Protection, Institute Ekoman, with the call of Committee on Environment SCTM, encourage the leadership of the City, Nis Municipalities (Palilula, Pantelej), institutions and public-utility companies/enterprises (Toplana, Naissus, City Development Directorate), Dunav Insurance, ED Jugoistok to take the role of coordinators in implementing these activities. On this occasion in Nis a joint session of the Council for Environmental Protection and City Council efficiency was held. Bojan Kovacic, director for Agency for energetic efficiency of the Republic of Serbia, Sonja Popovic, president of the Council for lofe protection and sustainable development of the City of Nis and Goran Vuckovic, president of the Council for energy efficiency of the City of Nis spoke about energy efficiency and life protection.

In the preparation of activities for `One hour for our planet 2010` it was announced the list of objects/buildings/institutions that will be in the dark on Saturday: buildings of the City Assembly of Nis Nikola Pasic 24, the Presidency building in 7th street July 2, Department for Municipal Affairs, Energy and Transport in the street General Tranijea 11a, Department for the planning and construction of the street, General Tranijea 10, building in Karadjordje street 16, Pantelej Municipal Building. Palilula Municipal Building, Sinđelić square and Square of King Milan, (agreed with the Directorate for the construction of the city of Nis), the National Theater - after the performance the Theatre will symbolically turn off the lights.

The invitation is open and information about participation can be sent to the City of Nis or media net EKOpolis - ekopolis@bankerinter.net. Participation in action in 2010 year, so far confirmed more than 1,100 cities. This number increases from hour to hour, as people begin to realize how easy this type of action are. They may contribute to changes in daily habits in order to preserve the planet. WWF is one of the largest and most respected international organization of protection, bringing together almost five million supporters through active global network in more than 100 countries.
